Volvo Fan Clutch: Regulating the Temperature
The Volvo fan clutch operates at different speeds under different conditions to lessen drain on the engine and to save fuel as well. The fan clutch runs nearly as fast as the engine each time the engine is hot. On the other hand, it runs much more slowly when the engine is cold. Actually, its operation is regulated by a valve that is opened and closed by the thermostatic spring. The flow of a viscous silicone fluid between chambers in the touch assembly is controlled by the valve.
The fan clutch is essentially disengaged when the engine is cold. This is the reason why the fun runs at its slowest level compared to engine speed. The air flowing to the fan becomes hotter when the engine warms up. This causes the thermostatic screen to unwind and open the valve. It is into the main chamber where the silicone fluid from the reservoir flows, engaging the clutch. Now the fan spins faster although slightly lower than the engine.
To make it more clear, the fan clutch ensures that the fun will rotate at the proper speed to keep the engine from overheating and reduces drive to the fan when it is no longer necessary. It has a liquid coupling partly filled with silicone oil designed for the purpose. The heat alerts a bimetal coil spring to uncoil or expand as the temperature of the air passing through the Volvo radiator rises. The expansion will then allow a little more oil to enter the fluid coupling making it rotate the fan.
Fuel consumption is reduced by slowing the fan when it is not needed. It also makes lesser noise as well as saves engine power. Basically, the fan clutch is dependable although, just like other components, may fail. If you need to replace your fan clutch, you have just arrived at the right place. We offer quality replacement parts for your Volvo vehicle including the Volvo fan clutch and they are all available in stock. Check us out; we are worth your time.
