Volvo pressure plates contain some cover and release fingers, clutch plate and springs. This assembly can be found sandwiching the clutch disc in between as it is bolted on the flywheel. In general, there are three different types of clutch discs: the diaphragm, long style and the Borg & Beck. Diaphragm pressure plates use a large Belville-styled spring to load the pressure plate. The long style pressure plate can be identified with its three thin fingers engaging the release bearing. Lastly, the Borg & Beck style has three wider fingers compared to the Long pressure plate. Of these three, the diaphragm type is the most often used.

The clutch will be greatly affected with a damaged pressure plate. The symptoms would include clutch chatter, clutch spillage, and a dragging clutch.
