Steering rack: Puts Volvo control in your hands
The Volvo steering rack is connected to the steering wheel through a set of shafts and U-joints. As you try to turn the steering wheel, it moves the pinion which then pushes the steering rack either to the left or right side. Connected to your Volvo wheels are the ends of the steering rack hence the steering rack input turns them to the left or to the right. Actually, the use of steering rack is opposed to the steering gearbox to save space and weight. It was only in this modern age when the steering rack was used to vehicles with coil cover strut design suspension.
The steering rack is generally located on the car’s sub frame and connects to both the steering column and the Volvo tie rods. In most cases, the steering rack lasts with the life of the vehicle. It is permanently lubricated and uses an engine-driven pump or the Volvo power steering pump to supply high pressure hydraulic fluid to the steering rack as you turn the wheel. This goes to show that it is very easy now to turn the steering rack. Moreover, there are a number of hoses, seals, and o-rings that attempt to contain the hydraulic fluid.
When advanced cars have a bad power steering rack, this translates into a leaky power steering rack. Note that a leaky steering rack doesn’t have the capacity to contain the fluid needed for the light and easy steering, hence replacing the component is necessary. It is easy to know whether you are having problems with the steering rack. For one, you can experience a loss of power steering fluid. You may also experience signs like steering problems, wandering, and wobbling. A new replacement must be a unit with all new seals and gaskets.
Should the situation get worst, reach out for us. We offer solutions by offering you with quality replacement parts for your Volvo vehicle including the Volvo steering rack and other steering suspension components.
