Volvo thermostat keeps engine operation up to specs
The Volvo thermostat allows the engine to heat up rapidly and keep it at a constant temperature. This is done by regulating the amount of water that goes to through the Volvo radiator . The thermostat is a small spring device that is sensitive to temperature and functions in such a way that it prevents the coolant from leaving the engine and circulating through the radiator until the correct running temperature is obtained.
The thermostat starts to open as the temperature of the coolant rises between 180 and 195 F. This will then allow the fluid to go through the radiator for cooling. The thermostat is open all the way when 200 to 180 F temperature is reached. At low temperature, the outlet to radiator is blocked causing the coolant to re-circulate back through the engine.
What the thermostat does seems quite impossible hence, seeing it in actual performance is really amazing. Actually, the secret of the thermostat lies in the tiny cylinder found on the engine-side of the device. This is filled with a wax that melts at approximately 180 F. The valve that is connected to a rod presses into this wax. When melted, the wax expands critically pushing the rod out of the cylinder and opening the valve.
Failure of the cooling system can leave you and your Volvo stranded by the side of the road. In order to avoid this, you have to make sure that you do your cooling system maintenance. Check the other components of your cooling system such as the Volvo radiator fan , Volvo radiator hose, Volvo heater core as well. Doing this will likewise extend the life and usefulness of the Volvo components. As their lifespan is reached, get the tough replacements from us. We have a wide range of Volvo parts such as the Volvo thermostat, Volvo air filter , Volvo fan blade, Volvo fan clutch and a lot more.
