Keeping tight rein of the Volvo with a Volvo transmission mount
Among the Volvo parts and Volvo accessories that are prone to deterioration is the Volvo transmission mount. This holds the transmission assembly to the body of the vehicle and is made of high strength rubber and steel. The rubber contained within the mounts become old and brittle, which means poor performance of isolating the drivetrain from the rest of the chassis. Note that old or worn motor and transmission mount can cause risky shifting troubles since the drivetrain is no longer strongly held in its position.
An indication of this failure mode is the gearshift knob jerking backwards under hard acceleration or hard selecting gears when cornering. The appearance of cracks in the rubber is a visible sign that you need a replacement. Over the years, the rubber will deteriorate and will need to be changed. Actually, it is easier to replace the transmission mount than the engine mounts.
Supporting this part is the transmission mount bar that is bolted to the rear of the car. The transmission mount is known for its performance and dependability. It functions to isolate the chassis of the car from vibration that the transmission will transmit on a normal driving. Connected to the engine, the transmission has the possibility to twist and turn as the car accelerates or decelerates under heavy braking. Misalignment with respect to the chassis is to be expected when the transmission is flexible and sloppy.
This can cause the so called “miss-shift” leading to an accidentally shifting from a high gear to a much lower gear and over-rev of the engine. Note that an over-rev is damaging to the engine and can end up with the valves hitting the tops of the pistons and bending. You don’t want of course to experience this misfortune. So if you got a damaged Volvo transmission mount, there should be no more second thoughts, replace it now. And if you are really that meticulous driver, then choosing our store is absolutely the right decision.
